Jewish life in southern Italy stretches back almost 2,000 years and many Italians from the region are now uncovering family traditions that they can trace back to pre-Inquisition Jewish roots. Join us to explore this fascinating history and hear about the present day communities with Rabbi Barbara Aiello, the rabbi of Sinagoga Ner Tamid del Sud (The Eternal Light of the South Synagogue) in Serrastretta and director of the Italian Jewish Cultural Center of Calabria (IJCCC); David Abulafia, emeritus professor of Mediterranean History at Cambridge University and winner of the 2020 Wolfson History Prize; Yolanda Ropschitz-Bentham, who has published two books about Calabria’s Ferramonti concentration camp; plus chef and food writer Silvia Nacamulli, whose new book explores the history of Italian Jewry through recipes collected from across the country. Read more about the Jews of southern Italy in the Winter 2023 issue of JR.
