Paris: Jewish Arts and Culture in the City of Light
Wednesday 22 – Sunday 26 October 2025
“I have got used to beating the streets of Paris, happy beyond words dreaming of a life 125 years long – with the Louvre radiant in the distance” – Marc Chagall
Join JR this autumn, to follow in the footsteps of Chagall and learn about the rich history of the Parisian Jewish avant-garde in the early 20th century. Led by art historian Monica Bohm-Duchen and JR’s executive director Dr Aviva Dautch, we’ll visit bohemian Montparnasse, home of Gertrude Stein and the ‘Jewish School of Paris’ (L’école Juive) where, 100 years ago, you would be as likely to hear Yiddish as French; stroll in Parc Monceau, the fashionable haunt of flâneurs and collectors (including the Ephrussi and Camondo families) as well as literary celebrities such as Sarah Bernhardt and Marcel Proust; and explore the cultural history of the Marais’ Jewish quarter.
The Musée de Orangerie will be hosting a landmark exhibition about Berthe Weill, the female Jewish art dealer who launched Modigliani’s career (as well as the careers of Matisse and Picasso), protested the antisemitism of Degas and proudly proclaimed her pro-Dreyfus sympathies. Our trip will include an exclusive private tour and Q&A with the exhibition’s curator.
This tour is arranged in association with Bespoke Kosher Travel and is for Jewish Renaissance subscribers only. Not currently a subscriber? Click here to subscribe.
