Nothing says summer quite like the sporting season, so we’re following the Olympics over to Japan in the summer issue of JR. Come with us to meet members of Japan's Jewish community and discover the country’s long connection with Jewish traders, settlers and refugees. Plus, we’ll explore the ways Japan has remembered the legacy of World War II, both in its education initiatives about the Holocaust and in assessing its own legacy in Asia.
Guest speakers: Nobuki Sugihara, the youngest son of Holocaust hero Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat who, during World War II, helped thousands of Jews flee Europe by issuing transit visas allowing them to travel through Japanese territory. Plus Akio Yoshida, director of Fukuyama Holocaust Education Centre; Ada Cohen, professor of Jewish studies at Kyoto's Doshisha University; and Jerry Rosenberg, former president and current board member of the Jewish Community of Japan, a congregation based in Tokyo.
