Age of Confidence: Jacqueline du Pré and the Elgar Cello Concerto

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Jacqueline du Pré's groundbreaking performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto at the Royal Festival Hall, which shook the classical music world. To celebrate, we’ve teamed up with the Jewish Music Institute to show Christopher Nupen's 1982 documentary, Jacqueline du Pré and the Elgar Cello Concerto. The film will be followed by a discussion of du Pré's life and work with cellists Natalie Clein and Francesca Ter-Berg, and Rabbi Ariel J Friedlander, the daughter of Rabbi Albert Friedlander, who married du Pré and Daniel Barenboim and later wrote about the cellist. This event is part of our 20th anniversary year of celebrations and links to our book, Age of Confidence: The New Jewish Culture Wave, which examines the past, present and future of J-culture.

In celebration of our 20th anniversary, we’ve launched our first book, Age of Confidence: The New Jewish Culture Wave, which comprises five essays by experts in their fields that cover Jewish culture over the last two decades in a period that spans the attacks on New York’s Twin Towers in 2001 to the challenges of creating culture under Covid today. Interspersed with the essays are a series of archive pieces from past magazines, ranging from Mike Leigh on Arnold Wesker to Linda Grant on Saul Bellow, plus an introduction by Howard Jacobson.
