JR's Arts Editor Judi Herman invites you to join High Holy Days services at Northwood & Pinner Liberal Synagogue
We are looking forward to welcoming all of our members, their friends and anyone who is in search of community to join Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue for the High Holy Days. All of our services are streamed via a variety of platforms – the NPLS website, Facebook, YouTube and some via Zoom (email admin@npls.org.uk for log-in details) – so you can watch wherever is most convenient for you. Wherever you join from, please do send us messages in the chat so that we know you are there and can give you a shout-out. See below for the full list of services and times.
I was also asked this year to curate a Musaf (Additional) Service with a difference for the time and space on Yom Kippur (28 Sep), between the Morning Service and the Afternoon Service. This will feature some of the Liberal tradition’s most beautiful music and readings, poetry and prose from Biblical to modern times, that take us through not just Jewish history but the history of the world, with some timely ecological messages and calls for tolerance, coexistence and tzedakah (extending help to those who need it).
This year’s pre-recorded, streamlined service is held jointly with Finchley Progressive Synagogue and features music both choral and solo from NPLS choir and soloists and FPS member and professional musician Dean Staker. Among the readings of well-loved poetry and prose from this service, you’ll hear some thought-provoking new additions. Our readers are members of both communities, led by professional actor and FPS member Elliot Levey, who featured in JR’s July 2020 issue. Legendary singer Paul Robeson’s passionate love of Judaism is also spotlighted, with a chance to be stirred by his extraordinary voice singing in Yiddish. Join the service live at 1pm or later when it suits you.
