Journey with us to Provence and the Côte d’Azur to explore the region’s rich Jewish heritage

Discover the Jewish art, history and communities of Aix-en-Provence, Nice and the French Riviera on this six-night trip to the culture-rich South of France. Home to Marc Chagall from the late-1940s onwards, with stunning Mediterranean landscapes and unexpected connections to the Holocaust, this region provides a vibrant and dramatic slice of Jewish heritage.

Highlights include:

  • Guided tours of the Chagall Museum and other sites relevant to this artist, including Vence Cathedral and the Fondation Maeght, St Paul-de-Vence;

  • Visits to Picasso’s Temple de la Paix in Vallauris, Matisse’s Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence and a chapel decorated by Jewish painter Théo Tobiasse in Le Cannet;

  • A chance to explore the complicated history of the former Vichy government internment camp of Les Milles, plus a stop in Sanary-sur-Mer, where several eminent refugees from Nazism found sanctuary;

  • Jewish heritage tours led by expert guides in the old towns of Aix-en-Provence and Nice;

  • Visits to the Ephrussi Rothschild Villa and Villa Kérylos (built by the Jewish Reinach family);

  • Additional lectures by art historian Monica Bohm-Duchen and JR executive director Aviva Dautch;

Please note that although Jewish Renaissance is arranging this trip, the travel company you are contracting with is Bespoke Kosher Travel, who are making all the bookings within the above package and providing your package protection (IATA and PTS registered and bonded) – this covers all elements of the tour as described above, but does not include issues caused by your flights or individual circumstances. It is highly important that you also arrange your own individual travel insurance. We also recommend that you apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).

All accommodation will be four star. For our nights in Aix-en-Provence we will be staying in the Grand Hôtel Roi René, which is near the centre of town, and in Nice, the Westminster Hotel & Spa on the Promenade des Anglais.

We will be spending Shabbat in Nice, where the hotel is within a 20-minute walk of a number of synagogues. We will ensure that it is possible to be Shabbat observant for those who require.

This is a high-end tour, in both comfort and quality, however Jewish Renaissance has partially subsidised the single supplement to help lower the cost and overall has set the price as low as possible, so that cost isn’t a barrier.
