We are thrilled to announce the first ever JR Book Club. The meeting will take place online via Zoom and we will be discussing Ridley Road, which is set to become a major four-part drama for BBC One.
This is the debut novel by British author Jo Bloom, who was inspired to write it after meeting a member of the 62 Group, a band of Jewish men who fought fascism on the streets of London in the early 1960s. The story is told from the perspective of a 20-year-old Jewish hairdresser from Manchester, Vivien Epstein, who moves to the East End to start a new life after the death of her father.
For the first half of the event (3-3.45pm) JR’s editor Rebecca Taylor will lead a discussion about the book, followed by a tea break. During the second half (4-4.45pm) the group will be joined by the author for a reading and Q&A.
More information about Ridley Road and the small screen adaptation can be found at thebookseller.com.
For a little additional reading, we recommend an interview from the April 2016 issue of JR with two former members of the 43 Group, the Jewish vigilante organisation that preceded the 62 Group. Click here to download the article.
Please register below to receive the Zoom link, which will be sent out at 5pm on Thursday 3 September. Bookings made after this time will receive the Zoom link one hour before the event on Sunday.
