A-WA GOES GLOBAL
The start of 2016 meant the 500th anniversary of the founding of the world’s first ghettto – in Venice – so we explored the history, literature, art and food that emerged from this remarkable place, as well as the new original artwork being created especially for the occasion. Plus Howard Jacobson discussed his novel Shylock Is My Name and why it has the Venetian merchant emerging in a satirised Alderley Edge. Elsewhere in the issue Prospect Magazine founder David Goodhart and JCore director Edie Friedman challenged each other’s diametrically opposed views on how to tackle the refugee crisis. And to brighten any gloomy winter days there you’ll find an interview with A-Wa, an extraordinary band of Yemeni-heritage Israelis who are making waves throughout the Middle East. Plus articles on Jewish drag queens, the amazing Peggy Guggenheim and the surprising post-war cabaret photos of Roman Vishniac.
